The Youth Of Ogbaru National Association (USA) Say THANK YOU To The Parents And To President Odili P. Chukwuemeka

The First Annual Ogbaru National Association (USA) Youth Forum took off on Saturday, September 1st. A crowd of Ogbaruan youth gathered at the Ramada Inn on Saturday morning to participate in a day of learning, exploration, and amusement. The day began with a tour of Atlanta. Wearing personalized green t-shirts provided by the Ogbaru National Association, the youth relaxed in the comfort of a large coach bus and listened to the voice of an enthusiastic tour guide as he related exciting facts about Atlanta, such as: Atlanta’s history, the location of the 1996 Olympic Games, The Royal Peacock Club, the history of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and more. The youth were able to see Atlanta’s landmarks including, Turner Field Stadium, the Sweet Auburn District, The Capital Building, Ebenezer Baptist Church, The King National Historic Site, Paschal’s Restaurant, Centennial Olympic Park, The Coca-Cola Factory, The Georgia Dome, the Atlanta University Center, and the CNN Center. The tour was especially entertaining for those who had never been to Atlanta, as there were visitors from Washington D.C., New York, Tennessee, Texas, and North Carolina. After the tour, the wide-eyed youth sprinted into the hotel banquet hall to engage in a session organized by Mrs. Ada Ngoddy, Amaka Ngoddy and Chika Oduah. The youth enjoyed slices of pizza while listening to an inspirational message by Uche Ngoddy, who discussed topics such as: the importance of respect, leadership, and the advantage of being Nigerian American. The youth responded to the message by asking questions and providing positive feedback. After the message, the youth learned about Ogbaru culture- reviewing the names of Ogbaru towns, learning about subsistence strategies and popular pastimes. After dramatizing situational scenarios, the youth engaged in a funny oral questionnaire game of:
What I would do as a Nigerian American youth if…….
The forum ended with a semi-formal dance party with the young people showing off modern dance moves, joking around, and just being themselves. All in all, the First Annual Youth Forum was a foundational kickoff- a success and a great way for the young people to get involved in the Annual Ogbaru Convention. Friendships were established and something even more significant took place: the Ogbaruan youth actively engaged in an integral part of Nigerian culture and this, they will never forget. The forum was a way of letting the young people know that the adults desire their involvement and the youth were definitely happy. There were many new faces and everyone exchanged greetings, smiles, hugs, laughter, and phone numbers. Yes, phone numbers. So parents, if you find long distance phone calls from your teenager’s cell phone, just know that they really had fun at the First Annual Youth Forum!
